What are the benefits to being a Notary Public?

My roommate needs a Notary to sign her lease, and it got me wondering exactly what the Notary does. I live in Florida, and from what I'm reading, they are an impartial witness to a document, and can even perform a marriage ceremony. What I don't understand is, what are the benefits to being a Notary? It doesn't seem like there is a monetary incentive (though I could be wrong), and while I realize that there are many people who will do this simply in order to benefit their community, is there something else as a motivator?
